Links to Software

Recommended Browser Software:

Recommended VRML viewers:

The three-dimensional scenes presented in this tutorial require a VRML viewer that displays files that adhere to the VRML 2.0 standard. It was necessary to use this newer format, as the lighting models in VRML 1.0 produce wildly different output in different viewers. Unfortunately, the VRML 2.0 standard is fairly new and not much software is available to view it. I have only found one product that works well on Microsoft Windows platforms. It is WorldView 2.0, from InterVista. I have tested it with both Netscape Navigator 3.03 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02, under both Windows95 and Windows NT 4.0. A Macintosh version is also available, but I have not been able to test it. WorldView can be downloaded by following the link below. Note the somewhat steep hardware requirements before downloading the software. For Irix and HP-Unix platforms, SGI offer CosmoPlayer, which I have not tested. There are also versions of CosmoPlayer for Windows and Macintosh; these are reportedly problematic, but I have not tested the newest release. I would appreciate any feedback on VRML software and any problems or successes you may have viewing the VRML files on different platforms and/or operating systems.
