The highest mountain in the Cordillera Blanca is Huascaran, at
6,768m or about 22,200 feet. In this view, the triangular
peak of Chopicalqui is to the right and behind the hulking
presence of Huascaran. No small mountain in its own right,
Chopicalqui is 6,354 meters high, or just a bit under 21,000
feet. Though totally lacking in high altitude experience,
three of us had pretentiously planned to climb Chopicalqui.
Others joined us on the hike to the base of the mountain,
after which they trekked elsewhere in Peru.
This page links to pictures of the climb, a slide show
presentation of the same images, and journal entries from one
of the climbers. Some of the material was provided by John
Barrett and Geoff Harrison.
