Activities for "Accompanying People"
Attendees are encouraged to bring spouses or significant others.
During the time that the ISRR '99 conference is held at Snowbird Ski
and Summer Resort, there are many activities for "accompanying
people." Snowbird offers great outdoor fun.
- Lisa Hollerbach
(official ISRR'99 Social Director) has planned a
number of interesting activities around Salt Lake City.
Lisa will be in contact with those bringing partners by email. In the
meantime, she can be contacted if there are any questions:
Snowbird Resort Activities
The resort will have a ski and sports swap on October 8-10. On
October 9 and 10 will be the 27th Annual Oktoberfest with German
entertainment, music, food/dancing, crafts, beer garden, Kinderland
and contests from noon to 6 p.m. Admission to Oktoberfest is free.
There will also be a tandem paragliding exhibition every day beginning
on October 10.
The Snowbird Activity Center, located on the Plaza Deck, offers guided
hikes and nature walks, mountain biking, sport climbing, tennis,
volleyball, in-line skating and a kids' fishing pond. If there are
enough people interested, we can arrange a group rate for any of the
above activities.
There is a spa on the top floor of the Cliff Lodge with a lap pool,
giant whirlpool, workout rooms, classes in aerobics and yoga, spa
treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, a solarium and a full-service
beauty salon.
Conference Activities
On Sunday, the conference luncheon will be an outdoor barbecue
(weather permitting). It is a 10-minute walk to the outdoor site from
Cliff Lodge. On Tuesday, the conference will sponsor a tram ride to
the top of Hidden Peak, the highest point accessible by mountain
transportation. It is possible to hike down the mountain from the top
of the tram. For the faint of heart or altitude-challenged, the tram
runs in both directions. The hike down takes about 2 hours for the
average out-of-shape tourist.
Other Local Attractions
Downtown Salt Lake City has a trolley tour that visits the historical
sites of the area, mostly relating to the settling of the valley and
establishment of the Mormon Church. Temple Square has guided tours of
the gardens, Church History Museum, and religious buildings. There is
a reproduction of an historical village in Emigration Canyon, across
from the Hogle Zoo. Instead of touring the University and Sarcos with
the conference participants on Monday afternoon, a Salt Lake City tour
can be arranged.
Park City is about an hour's drive from Snowbird, although it is just
over the top and down the other side of the mountain. Park City has
silver mine tour (half-day adventure), interesting shops and
restaurants, and many fine galleries. The Main Street area looks like
a movie set, on a steep hill, so bring walking shoes. Park City is
often 10 degrees colder than everywhere else and the silver mine
temperature is about 45 degrees. A trip to Park City can be arranged
if enough people are interested.
