The Earth's Mantle

The mantle of the Earth has a depth of 10-2890km.

Its temperature varies between 1000 degrees Celcius near the crust and 3700 degrees near the outer core.

The mantle makes up 67.3% of the Earth's mass. The mantle is made up mostly of silicates along with iron, magnesium, aluminum, and silicon.

Heat convection currents in the mantle drives plate tectonics and volcanic activity.

The Earth's mantle includes the lithosphere and asthenosphere

The Lithosphere

The lithosphere is the area of the crust and the upper, solid mantle. The tectonic plates are part of the lithosphere.

The Asthenosphere

The asthenosphere is the sem-molten region below the lithosphere. The tectonic plates move on top of the asthenosphere.
